Genesis-HDR2 - High Clarity HDPE Food and Produce Packaging

As a sustainability-focused company, we understand the need to improve the plastic landscape. First Genesis, actively addresses the challenge of hard-to-recycle plastic films. Introducing Genesis HDR2. Genesis HDR2 is designed to boost the recyclability of produce and food packaging and enhance plastic recovery, recycling rates, and promote a circular economy. It improves sustainability and recyclability without compromising strength, protection, and affordability.

Our custom plain or printed mono-material Genesis-HDR2 Produce Pouches are the first High Clarity HDPE film substrate designed specifically for produce packaging. This recyclable #2 plastic is widely accepted by municipal recycling systems in Canada, the US, and Mexico.

To Throw in the Recycling or Trash?

Go above and beyond for your customers by adding out biodegradable additives to your pouches! These additives attract microbes in the landfills. The microbes then treat the plastic as a food source and consume it. Once consumed, the microbes leave biomass such as humus which are nutrients for the soil and biogasses such as methane, which the landfill can harness to produce energy. Whether your customer decides to recycle or throw your pouch in the trash, they can be reassured that it will be responsibly taken care of. Our additives have been trialled and tested for their efficacy. If you want more information about our Landfill Biodegradable additive, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Why HDPE?

In short… With over 30 years of industry expertise, we’re constantly innovating to bring our customers new and exciting products. As the world shifts towards sustainable packaging, we’ve uncovered the potential of HDPE and that not all plastics are made equally. HDPE boasts properties that make it one of the most widely used plastics globally. Its ease of processing and recycling sets it apart from other plastics, creating one of the largest recycled markets. This economic advantage consistently motivates recyclers to prioritize. However, HDPE’s original cloudy appearance, think of the thin roll of grocery store produce bags, which is undesirable for the food and produce industry. Our Genesis HDR2 film addresses this by meeting the clarity standards of the produce and food industry without compromising strength, affordability, and sustainability.

In long… With over 30+ years of experience in the industry, we are always developing new and exciting products for our customers. With the global shift towards more sustainable packaging, we discovered the potential of HDPE and that not all plastics are made equally. Plastic recycling consists of collection, sorting, cleaning, and reprocessing. PET #1 and HDPE #2 are the two most used types of plastic in the world. PET cannot be made into a mono-material flexible film like our pouches but must be laminated with another material. Laminating two different materials together compromises the recyclability of the pouch because North America does not have the infrastructure to separate the two materials. This same issue occurs with the industry standard CPP #5 pouches.

As the demand for easily recyclable mono-material pouches rises, some have favoured LDPE #4 over HDPE #2 because of its clarity. HDPE is originally very cloudy and translucent, which is unsuitable for the produce and food industry as they prize high clarity to showcase their produce/product. HDPE and LDPE are derived from Polyethylene (PE), with the key distinction being that HDPE is High-Density Polyethylene and LDPE is Low-Density Polyethylene. The difference has a significant impact on how much LDPE can be recycled. LDPE’s lower density creates problems for recycling machines, causing jams and other issues. Furthermore, LDPE can be recycled into fewer products compared to HDPE. This means the market for recycled LDPE is much smaller than HDPE’s. The whole process of recycling LDPE requires more energy and effort, and since the market is smaller, it’s not as economically viable for recyclers. In contrast, HDPE, with its higher density, has a more efficient recycling rate. It’s widely used globally, creating a big market for recycled HDPE. This economic advantage consistently encourages recyclers to focus on HDPE, making its recycling rates higher and promoting overall sustainability.
